Mas que nada (let's run Away)
July 2024
Kiyoshi Yamamoto's performance at MUNCH in the summer of 2024 consisted of an evening filled with Brazilian music, dance and fabulous costumes made by the artist.
Yamamoto works with textiles, sculpture and performance, and explores themes related to identity, belonging, existence and politics. In his work titled MAS QUE NADA (Let’s run away) Yamamoto draws inspiration from Edvard Munch’s motifs Madonna and the Dance of Life. Large, colorful costumes made from recycled materials, Brazilian music and the dance quadrilha are linked to myths about the sun and moon from the indigenous people of the Amazon, St. Hans and Pride celebrations. The artist asks: “What do we define as ‘foreign’ and how can we together counteract the experience of alienation?”
